Insider's Guide: Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History - Visit Pittsburgh

The Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh is a collection of four diverse museums located in the Pittsburgh area. The Museums were founded by Andrew Carnegie, a well-known and wealthy figure in Pittsburgh who donated most of his wealth to libraries and schools.

The museums welcome around 1.4 million visitors each year. Together they display over 60 temporary exhibitions and films every year. Their mission is to educate visitors through their displays and exhibits. They educate over 360,000 school aged children a year through their educational programs.

The Andy Warhol Museum

The Andy Warhol Museum located on the North Shore of Pittsburgh invites visitors to view and appreciate the many pieces of artwork created by Andy Warhol himself. The museum has 17 galleries that exhibit Warhol’s work as well as a vast collection of art by many other artists. Warhol’s art includes paintings, drawings, photos, film, and sculptures making this museum the largest museum dedicated to one artist.

Carnegie Museum of Art

Located in Oakland, the Carnegie Museum of Art displays an exquisite collection of American and European history. The museum’s 25 galleries exhibit 35,000 pieces of art comprised of paintings, sculptures, photos, videos, and architectural casts. The museum also shows around 15 temporary exhibits a year.

The “Heinz Architectural Center” exhibits drawings, prints and models from the 19th and 20th centuries. The “Hall of Architecture” displays a collection of over 140 architectural casts and is the largest collection in the country. The “Ailsa Mellon Bruce Galleries” display over 500 pieces of decorative art and design from the 18th century to contemporary times. The decorate arts depict the Pennsylvania area and its local heritage.

 

Carnegie Museum of Natural History

Located in Oakland just outside of Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History is filled with history and educational artifacts. The museum owns 21 million specimens with 10,000 on display throughout the 20 galleries of the museum.

The “Dinosaurs in Their Time” exhibit allows visitors to travel through time and experience life-size dinosaurs in their environment. Dinosaurs exhibited are from the Jurassic Age. The “Discovery Room” provides hands-on experience to science learning and fun. Visitors will enjoy a walk down a hall with aquariums on both sides filled with live sea creatures. The “Discovery Room” also includes history of ancient Egyptian and cultures of modern Africa and American Indians.

Carnegie Science Center

The Carnegie Science Center is located on the North Shore and provides an educational experience to all visitors. The museum displays over 300 science exhibits.

The museum owns a real submarine, the USS Requin, used after World War II. Visitors can climb aboard and experience how the actual crew lived. A miniature railroad village offers a view of miniature trains that travel through Pittsburgh neighborhoods with life-like models and animated scenes. The Buhl Digital Planetarium is home to a state-of-the-art telescope that displays images on the ceiling for visitors to view. Shows produced by the Planetarium have been translated into 18 different languages and sent to over 400 planetariums around the world.
