Costa Rica packs an enormous variety of tourist appeal into an area the size of West Virginia. Bordered by two countries and two oceans, this friendly destination offers water sports, cloud forests, jungles and volcanoes.

Costa Rica is a Premier Tourist Destination

A thousand miles of coastline border the Pacific ocean to the east and the Caribbean sea to the west. Elevations range from sea level to the highest peak, Cerro Chirripo, at more than 12,000 feet. This varied terrain includes foggy cloud forests, soggy rain forests, active volcanoes and endless beaches. 34 national parks and 8 biological reserves are part of a conservation system that protects nearly 200 areas and an amazing variety of flora and fauna.

Arenal, in the north, is the most active of Costa Rica’s volcanoes, and thermal activity near the mountain heats the river and springs at the Tabacón resort.

Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort

Located at La Fortuna de San Carlos, the Tabacón resort is three and a half hours from Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose. The resort is just under 1,200 feet above sea level, nestled in a tropical rain forest. The nearly continuous eruptive activity of Arenal ( over 5,000 feet) is visible from the resort during clear weather.

A thermal stream flows below the main building and restaurant, with cascading waterfalls and multiple soaking pools. Paved walkways take guests and day visitors throughout the hot springs system, winding through exotic gardens and flowers. A large constructed pool with a wet bar is also adjacent to the main building complex. The mineral waters range in temperature from 81 to 107 degrees Fahrenheit, with most of them close to 102 degrees.

In addition to the hot mineral springs, the resort offers a full range of spa services and treatments in more than 20 therapy rooms and open-air bungalows. Two bars and a full-service restaurant are on site, and the resort has 114 guest rooms. Tour agencies in San Jose also offer day trips to Tabacon.

Accommodations at Tabacon Resort in Costa Rica

Five types of rooms are offered by the resort: The Honeymoon suite, Deluxe premium room, Superior premium room, Superior room and Forest room. Current daily rates for these rooms range from less than $300 for 2 persons to about $500 for 2 persons. Special packages are also available.

Each guest room has either one king-sized bed or two queen beds, a private balcony or terrace, air-conditioning, bathrooms with tubs (or showers in wheelchair accessible rooms), cable television and a coffee maker, among other features.

Other Activities at or Near the Tabacón Thermal Resort

The resort can arrange various tours and activities in the volcano area, including hikes to Arenal and area wildlife refuges, sky treks, hanging bridges, white water rafting, canoe float trips and birding. San Jose tour agencies also provide combination tours to the same area.

Other primary attractions in the vicinity of Arenal include the Monteverde Cloud Forest and Costa Rica’s largest body of water, Lake Arenal, with windsurfing, fishing, kayaking and boating.

The active volcano area of Arenal generates the thermal waters that flow through Tabacón resort. The natural mineral pools, waterfalls and gardens at Tabacón are worth including in a Costa Rica vacation, whether for a day or an extended stay.
